Profreading, a Valuable Tool in Writing
As a kid I remember my European parents sitting with me as I carefully wrote line for line to my Swiss relatives in a well thought out letter. They would have me write on unlined paper with a lined sheet underneath so my words would be perfectly written and in precise alignment. Neatness, spelling, and grammar were as important as solving a difficult math problem to them. My parents and I would read each line over many times to make sure every word was in its proper place and made sense. My paper had to be perfect with no little smudges on the paper, and the letter had to be written in pencil so mistakes could be corrected easily. Although my grammar is and may never be that great the lessons I gained from this letter writing experience are extremely valuable to me today.
I have become critical of others as they sometimes put out work that is not up to par. Some tell of their hard work in acquiring a good education and at the same time don’t proofread their papers enough to change even the tiniest mistakes.
I am also a strong critic of my own writing. After reading my articles many times over I always strive to submit a near flawless article, however, the past two were not anywhere near flawless. I found several mistakes that I had made and now hopefully have corrected all of the errors. I find that proofreading is such an important tool in writing. You cannot proofread enough, also, after you have gone over your paper, it is always good to have someone else to proofread your work. When the spelling mistakes are corrected there will almost always be something that could have been said differently.

I am a want to be writer. I took a course in writing children’s books years ago and loved it. The problem is giving myself a push to write on a regular basis. When it’s up to par it feels like writing comes together like a puzzle but when I’m not in the mood it shows in my writing.
