Windows Xp Screensaver Problems

What is this file flash.ocx ?

I have recently bought a new laptop and am frustrated at seeing how my PDA and mp3 player struggle to get to grips with Vista (I have Home basic). I have been thinking about dual booting or running XP in VMware player and downloaded a copy of Windows XP online. The dvd I burnt it on (I burnt the dvd on my desktop which is connected to the net and runs XP) will run on my desktop but won’t even be acknowledged by my laptop. After applying windows XP settings I can explore the dvd, but when I try to run the install.exe I get error messages telling me that “this version of windows no longer contains the file flash.oxe” or to that extent. I am also referred to contact the support at flashexebuilder.com. What is the problem here? I have no idea whether flash media player is installed on my system, I didn’t install it anyway and I don’t seem to have any other problems elsewhere, like screensaver problems. What are my options and what do I do?

Flash.ocx is a file used by third party screen saver programs.
These screen savers are coded to look for the file flash.ocx and recent version of Macromedia’s Flash application now name the same file flash9.ocx or even flash9a.ocx.

The reason you get this error message is that the screen saver is looking for the old file name.

To fix this problem, you have two options. The first one would be to simply uninstall the screen saver. Once that is done the error will go away. The second option if you simply cannot bear to part with your screen saver is a bit more involved. What you will need to do is find the flash9.ocx file and copy it as flash.ocx. To do this, browse to the C:WindowsSystem32MacromedFlash folder. Locate the flash9.ocx file and right click it and select copy. Now just right click in a blank spot of the same folder and select paste. You will then find you have a file called Copy of Flash9.ocx in the folder. Right click the new file and select rename and change the name to flash.ocx.
