what are topics that a should be a taught to children of age 11-15 in a drawing and painting class?
I am person who is quite well versed with the drawing and painting side of art but the thing is i am now going to be teaching others especially kids of 11-15 years of age do the same. can somone help me out with what to start with,what topics and areas of drawing to cover and how to bring about the best in them.
I believe I posted an answer to your ‘5-10 age group’ question, but I would like to tackle the response for this one.
The older children are becoming more self-aware and aware of their world and environment. You may find that many have political and social views, which vary in diversity and complexities. This age group is going to be more shaped and defined by what they see on television, hear on the radio, and read/interact with on the internet. You may also find that many of them are going to gravitate towards what is popular in media — anime and manga, for example. Your challenge is to capture their attention and interest in something other than what media is basically spoon-feeding them. Basically, your challenge is to teach them that art is more than what’s necessarily popular — to expand their scope, because they’re beginning to lose that wide-eyed innocence of the ‘5 to 10 age group’.
Please note: it ain’t going to be fun…
Since this age group is so inspired by media, use media to teach them. One good example of what you can do as an instructor is to possibly introduce them various styles of art — realist, surrealist, abstract, etc. — and have them create something like packaging for current day products (CD/DVD covers, video games, fashions, etc.) using the certain styles of art. By doing this, you’re ‘killing two birds with one stone’, because you’re teaching them about something they would probably yawn about and capturing their interests by using what they enjoy.
Also, with this age group, art classes are becoming an elective class. They signed up — it was an option to take art. There is a pro and con to this, because either they’re viewing it as an easy grade/credit or they have a sincere desire to take the class. This would be an excellent opportunity for an instructor to teach students about the career fields associated with art. It would be a chance and opportunity for students to find out just how much art plays a part in every aspect of their lives — architecture (the house they live in), fashion design (the clothes they wear), packaging/logo/brand development (the soda they’re drinking and the bottle it’s in), CGI (the Pixar movie they’ve seen in the theater), interior/textile (the flowered bedspread they cover themselves with at night or the flowered wallpaper they fought with their mother to plaster their walls with), costume/set design (Dracula, The Gladiator, the Star Wars Trilogy, etc.) — students, I don’t believe, are aware of just how much art they come into contact with every second of their lives. Finding out how much will broaden their possible interest in going into the field of art and hopefully gain their appreciation of art.
Overall, this age group is more difficult, because they’re losing their naivety — whereas they were individuals before, they are now ‘thinking’ individuals. The ‘magic’ of art doesn’t hold their interest or suspend their beliefs like it used to. As an instructor, you’re going to have to not only hold their attention, but keep it and build it up.
In closing, let me say that I do not envy this age group’s instructor’s task at hand, because it’s going to be trying and difficult. My guess is that you’re going to see many eyes rolling and hear many sighs of boredom. My best advice is to ‘razzle dazzle’ them and they’ll never catch on that they’re actually learning. Just like the magician has the beautiful assistant in the glittery costume. The audience watches the sparkly-sequined model, instead of watching the magician’s hands…

Use their interests to teach them, and you’ll not only capture their attention, but you’ll teach your students something incredible to remember all their lives — that art is in every thing and in every second of our lives. Without art, we would have nothing.
