What are some good ways for someone learning to start a budget?
Let me rephrase that. What are good ways for someone who is already a couple thousand dollars in debt to start budgeting? I need to learn how to go into student debt WISELY. I’ve already begun school, and am in debt to other non academic institutions about 2K. I’d like help to wisely pay off the BAD debt and go into student debt wisely.
Any suggestions?
Good to ask before you are in too deep. There is an old expression that may apply – you have to live below your means. That means there are people who are living who make less than you (hopefully). So if they can do it so can you. identify the necessities, rent, transportation to work, etc total them and divide by the number of times a week you get paid. That money must be your minimum budget each week – use it to pay those expenses or somehow set it aside for only that use. Let’s say that is $100 a week. Any extra is available to pay down your debt and spend on non necessities. Figure out how much of the left over should be used to pay your debt. If it is $20 a week have that moved from checking to savings automatically.
By the way a lot of things we consider necessities are not. e.g. cable, ok premium cable, ipods, latte each morning each lunch out, smoking, drink after work, etc. When it is time to write a loan payment check move it back to checking and write the check, If you need cash go to the ATM once a week and take out your weekly cash budget – that is it no charging or hitting the ATM again. If you get a raise allocate half of the increase to automatically move to savings each pay day.
