Residential Wallcoverings – Introduction
Wallcoverings can be your best friend or worst enemy. In centennial farm homes I have lived in, they were my best friends. They hid a lot of wall imperfections, hid paneling that I did not want to remove from lathe and plaster walls and did it quickly. In a day I could have a whole new look.
When I had children they were my worst enemy. They were ripped, had holes put in through the paper and the edges were curling away from the next strip in what seemed to be weeks. So I thought, if I started at the beginning about wallcoverings – how they were made, the different attributes they had – you would be able to decide if you wanted the faux look in a few hours or if you wanted to paint two to three layers for a similar look. So here it goes – everything I wish I had known when I began trying to make my nest my own.
Did you know that wallcoverings have been around for over 2,000 years? In 200 BC, the Chinese were hand-painting rice paper with scenes of flowers and birds, which were then mounted on linen or silk. The Minnesota Institute of Art has the MacFarlane Memorial Room. It was created around hand painted Chinese wallpaper.
Today there are independent design studios that produce hundreds of new collections every year. Add to that the wallcovering collections from mainstream manufacturers and that means that there are over a hundred thousand selections available every year. A bit overwhelming, even for the most seasoned designer. It is impossible to know if just the right wallcovering you want is in the book you have decided to go through. Yes, they do try to give you a hint – children’s, kitchen, borders – but I never know if just what I want may not be hiding in the one book I have chosen not to look through.
