Windows Server users?
I am planning to set up Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition in a small business with 5 computers (XP Pro), with the ability to add more users and computers to the domain at random times.
I am kind of confused with the server licensing (CALs). Are the amount of CALs the number of users that you can have on the domain (roaming profiles), or can you have an unlimited amount of users on the network?
First, you should NOT get standard unless you have a pressing need for trusts. Instead, buy Small Business Server – it’s easier to manage and licensing overall is easier. It’s also cheaper AND includes Microsoft Exchange for shared Contacts, Calendar, Tasks, and E-mail.
You decide what kind of licensing you want. There is PER Server or Per Client. Per server makes sense when you have one server, but if you add more then it can quickly get very expensive.
Per Client has TWO types of licenses – Per Device or Per User. Per device makes sense when you have 15 users but only 5 computers or other devices (including things like Windows Mobile-based phones) that these users might use. Per user makes sense when you have, for example, a group of programmers that each have multiple computers… so you might have 5 users each with 2 computers.
